Following his military service, he worked at an insurance agency in Kalamazoo and while there, accepted a temporary assignment in Traverse City where he met his wife, Kay. To use his words, "I went there for 2 weeks, and stayed for 27 years." In 1944, as a colonel at the age of 36, he landed on the Normandy beachhead to oversee medical care for the invasion forces.

After World War II, as an Army suregon in the Alaska territory, he successfully battled a 1953 tuberculosis epidemic among the Indians and Eskimos.

From 1960 to 1963, as director of health in the Panama Canal Zone, he obtained funding and began building the new Gorgas Hospital, and was awarded the Legion of Merit.

James worked for the Brainerd Schools for 35 years, retiring in 1986.
