  Historie	On July 10, 1943, "Operation Husky" began with a massive amphibious assault on the southern shore of Sicily. The campaign would last six weeks. According to the 16th Infantry Association, this unit was engaged in final operations at Troina on August 6th when Pvt. Hegstad was killed in action. His death was caused by a shell fragment due to a shell explosion. The September 16, 1943, edition of the Murray County Herald states that "as near as can be figured out he was a machine gunner and was charged with advancing into the mountains to clear the way for the infantry, a most hazardous undertaking."
