      Inspirator og "arkitekt" bak utvandrings-starten fra området Stangvik/Surnadal må ha vært faren Kristen Isakson Garte. Han drev fraktfart nedover Europa-kysten og skal ha vært helt ned til Middelhavsområdet. Båten skal ha hett "Synja" og ble solgt, så Gartrønningan kunne kjøpes, opplyser Ida Edahl i Northport.
