- He received his bachelor of science degree from the University of North Dakota in 1928 and a medical degree from the University of Nebraska in 1932.
In 1944, as a colonel at the age of 36, he landed on the Normandy beachhead to oversee medical care for the invasion forces.
After World War II, as an Army suregon in the Alaska territory, he successfully battled a 1953 tuberculosis epidemic among the Indians and Eskimos.
From 1960 to 1963, as director of health in the Panama Canal Zone, he obtained funding and began building the new Gorgas Hospital, and was awarded the Legion of Merit.
