Bud worked in the WPA. One of the projects of which he was the proudest was the split-rock observation platforms on the west and south shores of Lake Bemidji. He worked at his father's tavern, Ole's Poor Air-Conditioned Tavern, for several years. He served in the Army from December 1942 to November 1944,
